What this unit is and who it suits
The Crown CDi 1800 is a two-channel Class D power amplifier from Crown's CDi series, a line that sits between the entry-level XLS range and the higher-output ITech and DCi touring amps. It was designed for installed sound: fixed venues, houses of worship, clubs, conference rooms, retail and hospitality. The CDi 1800 is rated at 2 x 900W into 4Ω per channel, and it is a workhorse rather than a showpiece — a rack amp meant to run for years behind a fixed install.
This particular unit comes from liquidation stock and is graded condition A by our bench team. That makes it interesting for a specific buyer: an AV integrator or venue operator who needs dependable two-channel power for mains or monitors, wants the Crown name and serviceability, and does not want to pay new-channel pricing. It is also a sensible candidate as a spare or backup amp for an existing CDi install, because the form factor, connectors and setup are already familiar to the staff who run the room.
It is not a touring amplifier. If you need Dante, networked control, or the DSP depth of the DCi/ITech families, this is the wrong box.
Key specifications explained
- Channels: two, independently driven. One CDi 1800 can power a pair of full-range tops, or a top plus a monitor send, or two subwoofers in a modest system.
- Power @ 4Ω: 2 x 900W. In practice this comfortably drives most 12" and 15" two-way boxes and many single 18" subs, with headroom for peaks rather than running at the limiter all night.
- Class D: efficient and light for its output. Less waste heat in the rack, and less demand on the electrical supply than an equivalent Class AB design. The trade-off is that Class D amps of this generation are less tolerant of abuse and poor ventilation than older iron.
- Installation focus: the CDi series uses standard input and output connectivity and onboard processing aimed at system setup rather than live mixing. It is happiest in a rack with clean mains and reasonable airflow.
For a typical KTV room, small club or restaurant install, 2 x 900W @ 4Ω is generous. For a four-box passive PA per side run hard, it is not enough — look at the larger models in the range or bridge/parallel configurations with the right load.
Real condition and what our grading means for this listing
Condition A, as we apply it, means the unit is fully functional, cosmetically clean for a used amplifier, with no significant dents, no missing knobs or connector damage, and no signs of prior repair that would affect reliability. It has been checked on the bench and is sold as a tested used unit, not as new old stock.
What grade A does not mean: it is not a new amplifier, it does not carry a manufacturer's warranty, and it may show normal rack rash. If you are buying for a client-facing install, factor in a cleaning and a fresh rack screw kit. If you are buying as a spare, grade A is exactly what you want — a known-good unit that will sit on the shelf until it is needed.
FOB $980 reflects the model, the condition and the fact that it is liquidation stock rather than a retail boxed unit. Compare it against current new pricing for the CDi series and against used listings before committing.
Common problems to check on this model when buying used
Class D install amps fail in fairly predictable ways. On any used CDi 1800, inspect:
- Fan and airflow. Dust-clogged fans and blocked heatsink fins are the most common cause of thermal shutdown. Listen for bearing noise and confirm the fan spins freely.
- Power supply capacitors. Age and heat stress the primary side. Look for bulging, leakage or a smell of burnt electrolyte, and ask whether the unit has been serviced.
- Channel imbalance or crackle. Test both channels independently at low and high level. A dead or noisy channel is usually a sign of output stage or input board trouble.
- Connector and pot wear. Check input connectors, binding posts and any front-panel controls for looseness or scratchiness.
- Protection behaviour. Confirm the amp powers up cleanly, does not trip immediately, and runs for a sustained period without fault LEDs.
We do not publish failure rates for this model, and you should be sceptical of anyone who does without a documented sample. The honest position is that these amps are reliable when kept cool and clean, and expensive to repair when they are not.
Who should buy it / who should look elsewhere
Buy it if: you run a fixed install and need two channels of clean, efficient power; you already own CDi amps and want a matched spare; you are an integrator sourcing tested used gear for a client project with a defined budget; or you are building a KTV or restaurant system where 2 x 900W @ 4Ω is the right size.
Look elsewhere if: you need networked DSP and remote monitoring; you are touring and need road-rugged construction and fast serviceability; you need more than two channels per rack space; or you want a manufacturer warranty and factory-sealed packaging. In those cases, the larger Crown families or a current-production install amp will serve you better.
Acoustrade stocks tested used power amplifiers, loudspeakers, mixers, microphones and KTV systems for venue investors, AV integrators and rental companies. If this CDi 1800 is not the right fit, our team can point you to alternatives in the same power class.
